Junior
Surf, or "nippers", at Whangarei Heads is still in infancy,
(did I say that!), four very successful seasons have brought the
Patrol into line with other longer established Surf Clubs. A successful
parent coaching group is now firmly established, with the junior
surf teams comprising predominantly of local parents and their families.
Membership is now running at around 50 mainly local 7-12 year olds,
at present running every second Sunday.
The Objectives
of this younger arm of the Surf Patrol is to encourage the children
to participate in and enjoy all aspects of surfing life and the
Surf Lifesaving activity..
- To
assist them to develop and improve their surfing and Surf Lifesaving
knowlege and skills.
- To
improve their self image by developing self confidence and social
interaction skills.
- Promote
fitness and health.
- Provide
an understanding of fair play and good sporting behavior.
- Encourage
them to maintain their active participation in the Surf Lifesaving
Association of New Zealand.
- Involve
parents and interested members of the community as leaders, coaches,
and administrators.
The
Whangarei Heads Patrol is very well resourced thanks to ongoing
assistance from numerous funding agencies, this season will see
the Juniors completely outfitted fitted with Patrol coloured long
sleeve rash shirts, and hats, a garage full of boards and ongoing
tuition in their use, and swim skills, which is part of our commitment
to ensure the children get to fully enjoy Ocean Beach, the Surf
Club, and its environment.
